FIRST TO PRODUCE CARBON-NEUTRAL AMMONIUM NITRATE IN LATIN AMERICA

Enaex has reached a significant milestone in its quest for sustainability by initiating the production of ammonium nitrate at its plant in Cachimayo, Peru, using renewable energy sources. This achievement, makes the company the first carbon-neutral explosives producer with a fully integrated production chain.

The Cachimayo plant stands out as one of the pioneers in the industry by operating with renewable energy, hydrogen, and clean ammonia. The first tons of carbon-neutral ammonium nitrate are scheduled to be produced in November. This progress reflects Enaex’s strong commitment to leading the industry’s adoption of sustainable practices, which makes a tangible difference in the present and paves the way for a more sustainable future.

“Sustainability is part of Enaex’s history and its strategic plan, it is key in our purpose of Humanizing the mining industry. We have been investing significant resources, both economic and human, for more than 15 years to take care of our environment and guarantee the wellbeing of future generations. The production of carbon-neutral ammonium nitrate is part of this strategy,” explained Patricia Valenzuela, Vice President of People & Sustainability.

ENAEX AFRICA’S BARBERTON TRIAL, CREATES SYNERGIES WITH ENAEX PERU

Enaex Africa recently conducted a trial evaluating locally developed technology at Barberton Mines, Mpumalanga, South Africa, together with some colleagues from Peru. The launch of the locally developed Stopex™ small pump is making waves across Enaex.

Victor Medina, Head of Underground Mining and Giancarlo Rivera, Head of Underground Services at Enaex Peru, visited Enaex Africa recently to participate in trialing this technology at Barberton Mines’ Sheba shaft.

“In Peru, we have mines with narrow veins and small sections, which are similar to those found in South Africa. This technology will help us to increase the consumption of bulk emulsion in these mining units, and grow our sales,” says Victor.

The purpose of the visit was to:

  • Evaluate the Stopex™ pump at work in a narrow stope environment.
  • Assess the chemical reaction and the consistency of blast performance.
  • Test the combined function of the pump and its control unit.
  • Confirm that the pump can reliably produce the correct mix.
  •

The visit from Enaex Peru highlighted how both teams are building closer relations between the global organisation, our customers and our local innovation team. It’s exciting to see how cooperation and knowledge-sharing across the organisation is deepening, and how the various regions are increasingly benefiting from our global reach.

NEW ELECTRICAL AND AUTONOMOUS EQUIPMENT FOR UNDERGROUND MINING

Enaex is in the process of piloting the first fully electric and autonomous on-site bulk explosives factory equipment for underground mining, in what constitutes the first experience of this type in both Chile and the region.

We are making reference to the Electric Ubex One and the UG-iTruck, which were developed entirely in Chile by national engineers, and which objective is contributing to the safety and sustainability of the industry. These innovations are complemented with proprietary software, which were developed based on the real experiences on the field.

“We seek to improve the operating conditions of the workers, take them out of the line of fire, not expose them to direct emissions or adverse environmental conditions, with the objective of improving their quality of life, in order to humanize the mining industry”, says Danko Morales, Director of Underground Mining at Enaex.

GHANA SHIPMENT OPENS UP NEW HORIZONS

The first shipment of South African-produced detonators and boosters arrived in Ghana, West Africa, on 20 August 2023. The two containers housed the first products ever exported by Enaex Africa.

The arrival of the shipment proves our growth strategy is on the right track.

“It’s a huge achievement from a strategic point of view and really opens up the market for us. I have to say that I felt a lot of pride and emotion. Exporting by sea is also a whole new experience for us,” says Allen Steyn, Market Development Manager for Enaex Africa.

The local Department of Mines representative, as well as the Port Captain, were present for the offloading. “Everyone was very meticulous, and the process was handled strictly according to procedure. The shipment was double-checked for compliance, and we used a special truck with a driver holding a license to transport dangerous goods.”

Plans are already under way for a second shipment of six containers before the end of the year. The successful shipment of equipment produced in South Africa is a positive step on our expansion journey into West Africa.
