ENAEX ACHIEVES FIRST BLAST WITH CARBON-NEUTRAL AMMONIUM NITRATE

On October 16, 2024, Enaex marked a significant milestone in the mining industry by carrying out the first blast using carbon-neutral ammonium nitrate, “Prillex® Zero,” at the Constancia Mine in Peru, in collaboration with Hudbay Minerals Peru.

This achievement represents a concrete step toward the decarbonization of mining, a commitment Enaex firmly upholds by providing clean and sustainable solutions to our clients. As our CEO, Juan Andrés Errazuriz, expressed: “We want to support the decarbonization of the mining industry and offer clean solutions to our clients so they can achieve net-zero operations.”

Aligned with our purpose of humanizing mining, Enaex has implemented innovations that not only aim to reduce environmental impact but also prioritize the well-being of people and communities. A demonstration of this was the certification by SGS, a global leader in auditing and verification, of the carbon footprint of the “Prillex® Zero” prill, produced at the Cachimayo plant in Peru.

It is important to note that the production of “Prillex® Zero” is based on green hydrogen and ammonia produced at Cachimayo, which are essential for making ammonium nitrate. Throughout the project, process improvements were implemented, such as the use of certified renewable energy and the installation of catalyst technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the nitric acid plant, resulting in a reduced carbon footprint. Lastly, the remaining footprint was offset by purchasing carbon credits certified by SCX, the Santiago Climate Exchange.

Rodrigo Pastor, Country Manager of Enaex Peru, highlighted: “From the beginning, we decided to work with our client, Hudbay Minerals Perú, to carry out the first blast with carbon-neutral ammonium nitrate at Constancia Mine operations. Hudbay Minerals Peru shares our vision of promoting a more sustainable mining industry.”

This achievement not only reinforces Enaex’s position as a leader in sustainable solutions for mining, but also demonstrates how collaboration between companies can generate tangible results that benefit the environment and the future of the industry.
