ENAEX AFRICA SIGNS EXCITING NEW DEAL WITH KUDUMANE MANGANESE MINE

Our open cast growth plans gain a boost with a new customer in the Northern Cape: Kudumane Manganese Mine. Neil Kernahan, Mining Services Director, sat down with us to talk about the deal.

In an exciting new deal, Enaex Africa will become the sole blasting partner of Kudumane Manganese Mine in the Northern Cape, South Africa after six months of conducting blasting trials on-site.

“This deal adds additional volumes to our business, but it also grows our open cast mining market share,” says Neil Kernahan, Mining Services Director. “We aim to be the preferred supplier in the open cast market”.

Dr Mandla Gantsho, a shareholder in Enaex Africa’s B-BBEE partner, Afris, is also a shareholder in Kudumane and this strategic relationship is one of the reasons why Kudumane asked Enaex to conduct on-site trials to determine if our business could add value to their mining operations.

According to Douglas Manthey, Site Manager NC North, who spearheaded the trials, the results were extremely positive. “We achieved smaller, more uniform rock fragments. In open cast manganese mining, this not only improves loading rates, but it helps to reduce waste and increase the quality and volumes of the mined manganese, which increases export prices”.

In fact, Kudumane was so happy with the results that we were rewarded the business and we’ve transitioned to the large pit sooner than expected.

ENAEX ALREADY HAS ITS FIRST AGILE GRADUATES IN ALL ITS LEVELS

After starting the process at the end of 2020, the first generation of Agilists already has its first honor graduates who are ready to be the ambassadors of this work methodology in Enaex.

Of course, the road was not easy. From an initial group of more than 50 people, 11 reached the Condor level, after passing the 3 previous levels (blackbird, hawk and eagle). To reach this level, they had to conquer several milestones, such as developing and presenting strategic projects for the company and demonstrating how they used agility to achieve their goals. In addition, they achieved international certifications by mid to late 2021.

Now, the future is promising for this group since, with the new rank they achieved, they have all the knowledge and expertise to be partners of Enaex strategic projects, acting as guides with their Agile knowledge. Likewise, they will be able to participate in the Agile Committee where the status of the different agile projects will be reviewed. They will also be able to sign up as Trainers for the next generations of Agilists in Chile and the world, among other things.

Congratulations to Alejandra López, María Virginia Ramírez, Andrés Aliaga, Marina de Castro, Carlos Sabino, Roberto Segura, Carlos Ustares, Rodrigo Miranda, Felipe Devilat, Úrsula Bustamante and Francisco Pizarro for this great achievement!

STRATEGIC GROWTH PLANS TAKE SHAPE IN ENAEX AFRICA’S SECUNDA OPERATIONS

From a sustainability and growth point of view, Enaex Africa has invested capital and time into a number of strategic growth projects in our Secunda operations. John Schulze, Chief Operating Officer & SHE Director for Enaex Africa, and Gary Austen, the Senior Manager for the Secunda operations, give us a round-up of what has been happening.

There are four key projects Enaex Africa has invested in at Secunda:

200D: Our upgraded 200D plant is now fully operational:

  • We are able to create more product over the same timeframe.

  • The additional weighbridge and silos have increased our storage capacity by 50%.

  • We have added 17% to our production capacity.

The DaveyTronic Assembly Plant: Due to go online in March 2022, this will be the second DaveyTronic plant in the world and the first outside of France.

  • Locally, we will source components from South Africa, increasing local procurement. We will only import the electronic chips and technology from France.

Magazine refurbishments: The final three magazines of our 18-magazine facility are in the process of being refurbished.

  • These magazines have been operational for almost four decades and the primary upgrades were civil and electrical, bringing the magazines up to full integrity.

  • Upon inspection by the DOEL, we were told that this should be the standard for all explosives magazines in the country, highlighting the work, effort and capital that has gone into this project.

Prill Storage Warehouse: We are in the final stages of securing approval for our Prill Storage Warehouse.

  • This gives us bulk storage capabilities, which means we will have safety stock in hand should we experience supply chain disruptions.
