Enaex Brasil advances in implementing DaveyTronic 5

Enaex Brasil is taking significant steps in introducing the DaveyTronic 5 (DT5) system. Mineração Vale Verde was the first client to adopt the solutiojn, with implementation taking place earlier this year and an average monthly consumption of 3,000 pieces.

At Vale SA, Enaex is working on two implementation fronts. The first front, focused on mines located in Pará, in northern Brazil, began with Vale S11D. During the first month of testing, four blasts were carried out, with a consumption of 3,000 parts. The expectation is that Vale S11D will reach an average consumption of 20,000 parts per month by 2024.

The second implementation front focuses on mines served by Enaex in Minas Gerais, where the first blasting operations were recently initiated, with positive feedback from the client. “In recent weeks, we have begun work with the DT5 electronic detonators. They bring great benefits and are being applied in areas that require greater vibration control and compliance with established limits. It is great to see the teams integrated, sharing knowledge and results! I am very proud of this team and of everything they are doing to further improve our company”, says Bruno Farah, General Manager of Technical Transformations in Mining.

Enaex Argentina obtains new contract

During the first week of August, Enaex Argentina announced its new project in the market with the award of the operation in Mina Lindero, an open pit mine located in the province of Salta, in the north of the country. The client is Mansfield Minera S.A., a subsidiary of the Canadian Fortuna Silver Mines, which has gold reserves estimated until 2034.

The new five-year contract promises to bring attractive margins to the business, improving Enaex’s commercial sustainability and ensuring a higher return for its shareholders. In addition, an increase in local productivity and a significant reduction in manufacturing costs are expected at the Campanario Plant, where RA2 Matrix Emulsion, electronic detonators, cords and brinels, among other essential products for the operation, will be manufactured.

Obtaining this contract was the result of five months of negotiations that allowed Enaex to replace its main competitor in the region. This proactive and professional strategy led to the early closing of the contract, allowing the company to advance its goal of reaching a 25% market share, originally projected for 2025, to this same year 2024.

ECOTRUCK: THE NEW INNOVATION WITH WHICH ENAEX SEEKS TO MAKE ITS OPERATIONS MORE SUSTAINABLE

The EcoTruck truck is Enaex’s new innovation that aligns with the strategy of the main mining companies to make the industry more sustainable. This new machine suppresses the use of oil and diesel refueling trucks and provides versatility by being able to manufacture various mixtures on site.

At the beginning of June, this machine successfully completed its first test by supplying a factory truck with a mixture of oil and ALR in a 50/50 ratio, making it possible to load 39% of the shafts of a grid at Pacific Mining Company’s El Romeral Mine. The result of the operation was executed smoothly, and with optimal fragmentation, marking the first major milestone for the mix created in the EcoTruck.

Javier Ayestarán, Plant Manager at Romeral Plant, celebrates that “the EcoTruck has been a great added value to the operation because not only it fits the trend of making the processes more sustainable with recycled materials, but it also allows us to manufacture mixes according to the client’s needs, what they really require”.

LESOTHO TEAM SEEKS TO CONSOLIDATE ITS MARKET POSITION

After being awarded a contract with the world’s highest altitude diamond mine, GEM Diamonds’ Letseng Mine, the team led by Plant Manager, Kolo Kolo, is ready to gain a foothold in one of the most challenging mines in the region.

Guided by the Value “Innovation and entrepreneurship”, Kolo Kolo will seek to put the company’s name at the top, in a deposit where temperatures can reach -20°C in winter. “Our mission is to grow the business, grow as people, and help expand our presence in the continent,” says the Plant Manager, who plans to lead his team to its best performance in order to attract the attention of three other major diamond mines in the country.

“Safety is fundamental to this, it is our mantra,” emphasizes Kolo. A point included within the contract allows the team to postpone work if it is deemed unsafe. “There are cases of loose rocks on the side of the well, which must be cleared so that the truck can pass safely,” specifies the Enaex leader. This is in addition to winter circumstances when ice and snow create slippery conditions that must be handled more safely. Safety talks are delivered at the beginning of every day to remind collaborators of the correct procedures and behaviors of the mine.

Enaex CORE gains momentum in mining operations

Having started during 2019 and gained momentum in 2021, the Integrated Blasting Center (Enaex Core) has rapidly consolidated its presence among Enaex’s customers in Chile. Not only because it brings the company closer to the purpose of humanizing the mining industry with remote engineering centers (HUB), but also because it behaves as a knowledge center for the different professionals that are part of it; and therefore, it is considered a tremendous value-added tool for customers.

After a successful pilot with Doña Ines de Collahuasi Mining, we advanced to two Antofagasta Minerals S.A. operations (Zaldívar and Centinela Mining), generating more interaction between the technical teams, increasing the exchange of information and best practices. In addition, there are already two HUBs in: Santiago and Antofagasta, improving living conditions for dozens of collaborators in these cities.

“It has also allowed us to go beyond blasting by studying issues such as mine stability and ore processing,” says EMTS Manager Christian Mardones. “That is why, we have included professionals with other characteristics to the team to take technical assistance to a world class level with knowledge that is being generated within the company,” emphasizes Christian.

When asked about the possibility of internationalizing this service, the leader of EMTS comments that they are already in contact with the countries and are analyzing the possibility of providing technical assistance from Chile to other places in the region, which would mean a very important leap for the project and Enaex.

PANNA 1 back in operation after more than 4 years

After a pause of more than four years and considering the high cost of ammonia and the shortage of ammonium nitrate, the Vice-Presidency of Chemicals started up the Nitric Acid and Ammonium Nitrate Plant 1 (PANNA 1) of the Prillex Plant. This is in order to meet our commitments to our customers and supply the domestic and international markets.

Thanks to an agile, collaborative and, above all, safe work, the production complex carried out this project, which meant a great logistic effort on the part of the team.  Some of the procedures conducted were personnel retraining, mechanical integrity tests of the equipment, and a thorough review of the logic of the PANNA 1 automatic control system.

The Operations Manager, Rodrigo Vergara, and Process Engineer, José Rojas, relied on Agile methodology to create an interdisciplinary cell that included collaborators from maintenance, Process Safety, Quality Control, Warehouse and HSEC.

“Considering that it had not operated in such a long time and the immediacy of the demand, the team pulled out this mission in record time with all the corresponding safety protocols” comments Germán Lamas, Operations and Maintenance Manager at Prillex, adding that now the task will be to exceed 800 thousand tons of production this 2022. “There is room for improvement, but with agile and collaborative work we will achieve it” closes Germán.

ENAEX AFRICA SIGNS EXCITING NEW DEAL WITH KUDUMANE MANGANESE MINE

Our open cast growth plans gain a boost with a new customer in the Northern Cape: Kudumane Manganese Mine. Neil Kernahan, Mining Services Director, sat down with us to talk about the deal.

In an exciting new deal, Enaex Africa will become the sole blasting partner of Kudumane Manganese Mine in the Northern Cape, South Africa after six months of conducting blasting trials on-site.

“This deal adds additional volumes to our business, but it also grows our open cast mining market share,” says Neil Kernahan, Mining Services Director. “We aim to be the preferred supplier in the open cast market”.

Dr Mandla Gantsho, a shareholder in Enaex Africa’s B-BBEE partner, Afris, is also a shareholder in Kudumane and this strategic relationship is one of the reasons why Kudumane asked Enaex to conduct on-site trials to determine if our business could add value to their mining operations.

According to Douglas Manthey, Site Manager NC North, who spearheaded the trials, the results were extremely positive. “We achieved smaller, more uniform rock fragments. In open cast manganese mining, this not only improves loading rates, but it helps to reduce waste and increase the quality and volumes of the mined manganese, which increases export prices”.

In fact, Kudumane was so happy with the results that we were rewarded the business and we’ve transitioned to the large pit sooner than expected.

ENAEX ALREADY HAS ITS FIRST AGILE GRADUATES IN ALL ITS LEVELS

After starting the process at the end of 2020, the first generation of Agilists already has its first honor graduates who are ready to be the ambassadors of this work methodology in Enaex.

Of course, the road was not easy. From an initial group of more than 50 people, 11 reached the Condor level, after passing the 3 previous levels (blackbird, hawk and eagle). To reach this level, they had to conquer several milestones, such as developing and presenting strategic projects for the company and demonstrating how they used agility to achieve their goals. In addition, they achieved international certifications by mid to late 2021.

Now, the future is promising for this group since, with the new rank they achieved, they have all the knowledge and expertise to be partners of Enaex strategic projects, acting as guides with their Agile knowledge. Likewise, they will be able to participate in the Agile Committee where the status of the different agile projects will be reviewed. They will also be able to sign up as Trainers for the next generations of Agilists in Chile and the world, among other things.

Congratulations to Alejandra López, María Virginia Ramírez, Andrés Aliaga, Marina de Castro, Carlos Sabino, Roberto Segura, Carlos Ustares, Rodrigo Miranda, Felipe Devilat, Úrsula Bustamante and Francisco Pizarro for this great achievement!

STRATEGIC GROWTH PLANS TAKE SHAPE IN ENAEX AFRICA’S SECUNDA OPERATIONS

From a sustainability and growth point of view, Enaex Africa has invested capital and time into a number of strategic growth projects in our Secunda operations. John Schulze, Chief Operating Officer & SHE Director for Enaex Africa, and Gary Austen, the Senior Manager for the Secunda operations, give us a round-up of what has been happening.

There are four key projects Enaex Africa has invested in at Secunda:

200D: Our upgraded 200D plant is now fully operational:

  • We are able to create more product over the same timeframe.

  • The additional weighbridge and silos have increased our storage capacity by 50%.

  • We have added 17% to our production capacity.

The DaveyTronic Assembly Plant: Due to go online in March 2022, this will be the second DaveyTronic plant in the world and the first outside of France.

  • Locally, we will source components from South Africa, increasing local procurement. We will only import the electronic chips and technology from France.

Magazine refurbishments: The final three magazines of our 18-magazine facility are in the process of being refurbished.

  • These magazines have been operational for almost four decades and the primary upgrades were civil and electrical, bringing the magazines up to full integrity.

  • Upon inspection by the DOEL, we were told that this should be the standard for all explosives magazines in the country, highlighting the work, effort and capital that has gone into this project.

Prill Storage Warehouse: We are in the final stages of securing approval for our Prill Storage Warehouse.

  • This gives us bulk storage capabilities, which means we will have safety stock in hand should we experience supply chain disruptions.

The first Global Panel Discussion was a success

More than 460 people, from 11 different countries and 5 continents joined the first global panel discussion on January 13th. Our CEO, Juan Andrés Errázuriz, Vice-president of HR and Sustainability, Patricia Valenzuela, talked for over an hour and a half with the Chilean philosopher, Carolina Dell’Oro about the lessons learned last year and the challenges this 2021.

The pandemic marked a turning point for many companies, forcing many of them to change policies that will need to maintain in the future. “TRIP or RIP” was the example used by Carolina Dell’Oro to point out that the employers must join the new way of working to avoid failure. “The difference between both words is the T of trust. Without trust you will sink”.

She appreciated the mission Enaex has to humanize the mining industry, “it is a huge challenge for the future, and Enaex already has an advantage because the value of life is deeply rooted in every level of the organization”, said the Chilean philosopher.

Meanwhile, Juan Andrés Errázuriz and Patricia Valenzuela valued the efforts made in 2020 and highlighted the reciprocal concern among colleagues in the recent months. “It has been tough months, but the team spirit between our employees in every subsidiary has been breath-taking” remarked Errázuriz.

Enaex asserts its presence in the MassMin 2020

The eighth edition of MassMin took place in Chile last December, and due to the pandemic, the event was held virtually, with over 700 people registered and the presentation of 1,400 papers. This is the most important congress in underground mining worldwide. It is held every 4 years and the most relevant breakthroughs that have been made in such a period of time are presented therein.

Enaex made a presentation on the important progresses in blasting in large scale mining during the last years. Danko Morales, Underground Mining Manager, was in charge of this presentation. He provided details of the great technological innovations and safety in the matter throughout the 100 years of Enaex.

The talk entitled “Past, present and future of blasting technologies for mass mining” was marked by a review of the history of national mining and how our company has actively collaborated in the industrial development of this activity, which is very important to the local economy.

Mainly, the great technological innovations focused on providing the client with greater productivity and safety for people who work in the mines on a daily basis were highlighted. For example, the Mine-iTruck and Robominer, which allow for 100% remote controlled blasting, the Milodon Factory Trucks, the Ubex One, which allows for the mechanical charging of pumped emulsions that can be gasified in situ, especially for the development of tunnels, or Enaex Bright, which will provide recommendations according to the specific conditions of each location, bringing to life the famed Industry 4.0.

This was a great way to end the year of our 100th anniversary!

Rio Loa and Teatinos Productions Plants, committed with Safety and Quality

During 2020, the Administration and Staff of Rio Loa and Punta Teatinos worked hard to improve their Security and Quality index, achieving better ratings than the average of the last 5 years.

Last year, they celebrated different activities to reinforce our safety culture, working in the field in teams and conducting exhaustive examinations to the manufacturing process to end 2020 without Accidents with Time Lost.

Events such as Walk For Life, day and night shifts Leaderships, meetings of leaders, daily 5 minutes meetings, among others, helped to achieve the goals. Despite the pandemic, they were able to intensify, not only the COVID-19 protocol, but to keep the virus under control in both plants.

On the other hand, in the Quality area they aimed to lower by 50% the amounts of non-compliances with customers, numbers that will allow them to continue improving towards operational excellence to reach standards of a global company.

Without doubt, being closer, listening to our customers, meetings with suppliers, and delivering a comprehensive assistance, helped to achieve the plants objectives. Congratulations!

PERU

Enaex and Anglo American on their way to gender equality

In the mining industry in Peru, the female workforce represent only nearly the 7%. Although it is a small number, is a trend that has increased in the last years in the Peruvian country. Encouraging numbers, but not enough.

With this mission, Enaex Peru and Anglo American Peru, reached an important agreement to reduce the gender gap at Quellaveco Mine. Enaex will increase female employments up to 50% of the total staff in every position, including Mobile Manufacturing Units.

This policy involves a trainee program for every operation for their subsequent integration to the blasting services. Today, this program has progressed in a 50%.

This isn’t the first initiative of Enaex regarding gender equality in South America. During the second semester of 2020, in alliance with the Chilean Industrial Mining Training Center, three courses were carried out in the north of Chile. In addition, there is a project in Santa Cruz, Argentina aiming to incorporate 500 women into the industry.

Being committed to LIFE, also means to be committed to the social development of every person in our society in an equal way. Congratulations Peru!

Davey Bickford Enaex launches a safety program

In Davey Bickford Enaex, The Pyrotechnic culture is a paramount component of our company. Understanding the fundamental nature of pyrotechnics is essential in order to guarantee the performance of our products and the safety of our employees and users. To promote their knowledge, internal trainers conduct training modules on the main characteristics of primary and secondary explosives, pyrotechnic compositions, propellant powders, their uses, operation and the characteristics of initiators.

Finally, in order to understand better the safety rules concerning pyrotechnic products, we have developed, in partnership with the company Woonoz, an apprenticeship program called DB Safety School.

DB Safety School is the result of a long collaborative effort between the HR, HSE and CHEMICAL teams, who have worked hard to provide a tailor-made solution that fits perfectly with our needs. Within the apprenticeship program, our work environment is reproduced, and the situations described are based, among other things, on events already encountered in the past. This approach is intended to be very efficient for an easier anchoring of reflexes.

Our partner, the company Woonoz, is specialized in memory anchoring; as experience shows that it is very difficult to change the behaviors of employees.

In this sense, our training program DB Safety School is based on Memory Anchoring which is a pedagogical approach and a technological platform based on the one hand, on research in cognitive and behavioral sciences, and on the other hand on AI (Artificial Intelligence) engines allowing to individualize learning pathways.

This allows:

– To guarantee the sustainable retention of knowledge and the acquisition of good behavioral reflexes.

– Adapt learning pathways according to the initial level and capacities of everyone, in order to optimize the learning time required.

– To certify all employees: the final evaluation can only be validated after having followed the entire training program and having anchored each key point.

Davey Bickford Enaex uses all the means available to protect the company and its employees. This robust and effective approach has been set up to protect its employees and prevent them from putting themselves in danger, which in turn protects the company.

Every employee will be trained, whatever his or her job at Davey Bickford Enaex. The training course is divided into 7 modules: Knowing Pyrotechnics, my safety and that of others, moving safely, handling dangerous products, Executing in complete safety, At my workstation, Dangerous situations.

In line with our commitment to LIFE, in the application of our value of INNOVATION and to continue our good results in safety, this training will help us to maintain the ZERO Accident objective.

JUAN ANDRÉS ERRÁZURIZ
CEO ENAEX

We are already closing 2020 and it is inevitable to review the events of the year. I have no doubt that we will all talk about the COVID-19. No organization in the world was detached of this pandemic. For our Company, it has not been easy either. In some countries, restrictions were enacted for extended periods which undoubtedly affected our global results. Also, the production and export of ammonium nitrate had to be adjusted. However, most of the teams optimized their processes and although we did not manage to meet our 2020 budget, we came very close thanks to the commitment of all of you.

Undoubtedly, our great victory has been the preservation of our teams. Up to this day, we have not had any virus-related deaths to regret and we have only had a small number of positive cases. The implementation of prevention measures has been truly extraordinary and efficient in all the places where we operate.

But this year was much more than fighting this disease and the sustainability of our business. In this centenary, our company has taken important steps to materialize our dream, starting to operate in the most relevant mining regions of the world. On July 1, we began operating in Africa, the third largest market in terms of explosives consumption, which represents significant growth potential. In addition, last month we signed an important agreement to acquire Downer Blasting Services, which will allow us to consolidate Enaex’s presence in Australia, completing the full range of mining services in one of the largest markets in the world.

Humanizing mining can only be achieved by being the leaders in the industry, setting the course, bringing new technologies. Today, we can say that our dreams are not vain words, our dream is high-quality work that each one of us does from our field of action, obtaining a great result that today can already be glimpsed and that brings us closer to the first places of leadership in the world industry. Today, I want to tell you that I feel very proud of the great team that I have the privilege of representing and that I only have words of gratitude for each one of the members of the Enaex family.

I wish you a happy New Year’s Eve and that together we have a prosperous 2021!

GLOBAL
Enaex signs agreement to acquire 100% of Australia’s Downer Blasting Services

In line with the strategic plan to strengthen our international presence in the world’s most important mining regions, Enaex reached an agreement to acquire Downer Blasting Services, the rock fragmentation services subsidiary of the Australian Downer Group. This, also, will help to consolidate our company in one of the biggest market in the world like the Australian.

The agreement, signed on November 17 after a negotiation process that began in July, calls for the acquisition of 100% of the shares of Downer Blasting Services, with an approximate investment of US$ 45 million. The Australian company has more than 20 years’ experience in rock fragmentation services in both open-cut and underground mining, operating along the east and west coasts of Australia, where it provides services for iron, gold and coal mines, among others. Downer Blasting Services has 5 emulsion-manufacturing facilities and 40 mobile units distributed throughout Australia. It reported sales for the fiscal year ended June 2020 of around US$ 110 million.

Regarding the Australian market, Enaex’s CEO, Juan Andrés Errázuriz, explained how this acquisition will significantly fortify the company’s presence in that country, allowing it to offer comprehensive solutions in that market and broaden the offering to new customers. “Because of Australia’s size (Australia and the United States are the largest mining markets in the world), it boasts significant growth potential. We can contribute extensive knowledge, technology and innovation that we have been developing in the rock fragmentation industry for the mining sector,” highlighted Errázuriz.

GLOBAL

Introducing the Enaex Africa Corporate Social Investment Program

Enaex Africa has a well-established Corporate Social Investment (‘CSI’) Program that delivers shared value to communities surrounding Enaex Africa’s production plants and customers mining sites.

Enaex Africa is proud to be a responsible South African corporate citizen that delivers shared value to our customers and communities through  social investment, whilst at the same time ensuring that we also manage our ‘license to operate’ requirements, which also includes complying with the Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment Act (BBBEE Act). This is a governmental integration program to reconcile South Africans and redress the inequalities of Apartheid.

To share highlights for 2020 in terms of some of the exciting initiatives that Enaex Africa has brought to life:

School Infrastructure Program: A partnership with United Manganese of Kalahari.

This CSI project helps to improve the offerings by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) through its Nutrition Program, to ensure that nutritious meals can be served at schools in a safe and hygienic environment, and is a partnership between Enaex Africa and our mining customer United Manganese Kalahari.

Kudumane Primary School, Mothibistad in the Northern Cape was selected to receive brand new facilities for the nutrition program. In the past, meals at Kudumane School were prepared in makeshift facilities due the lack of infrastructure.

The school will receive a facility, which will cater for 224 learners seated, and doubles as a meeting room for the school. An additional building to be used as The Lego room designed to provide support towards cognitive learning in the school, which is enhanced through Care for Education training. The program aims to foster better quality education by enhancing children’s active learning capacity, alleviating short-term hunger, providing an incentive for children to attend school regularly and punctually; and addressing certain micro-nutrient deficiencies.

Covid-19 Support for the Rustenburg communities

Enaex Africa partnered with the Rustenburg Community Forum to support 5 local schools and social institutions with covid-19 essentials to assist in mitigating the spread of Covid-19.

Enaex’s support includes the provision of facemasks, sanitizers, and non-contact infrared Thermometers. To expand the beneficiary value chain, Enaex used a local supplier to manufacture facemasks to contribute to local economic development.  This support has been welcomed by the 5 beneficiary schools, and community leaders as the prevention of new infections is now a priority as we approach the holiday season in South Africa.

Capacity Building Program for fence line communities in Mpumalanga.

The main purpose of the Capacity-building program is to develop and strengthen the skills, instincts, abilities, processes, and resources that communities need to survive, adapt, and thrive in a fast-changing world.

Enaex Africa is supporting two youth organizations neighbouring our operations in eMalahleni (Witbank) and Weilagte in Delmas by proving the necessary tools and equipment (computers, printers etc) to these groups. This support will enable these youth groups to organize themselves and address issues on employment, entrepreneurship, and social advancement by being able to have access to a computer and e-mail to apply for jobs. Something basic that is often taken for granted but is a major obstacle for the poor to be able to access the job market and fight poverty.

By making these basic resources and skills development available to the unemployed and out of school youth, Enaex can help these young people to upskill themselves and stand a better chance of escaping poverty.

FRANCE
Héry moves towards Industry 4.0

Driven by the emergence of new technologies, Industry 4.0 today refers to a new generation of connected robotic and intelligent factories. With the digital revolution, the boundaries between the physical and digital world are shrinking to give life to an interconnected 4.0 factory in which people, machines and products interact. This is a challenge and a real opportunity for all the players in the Enaex group and it is in this direction that the Héry plant (France) wishes to move on today.

The business project was launched with a 2-day seminar were 20 people of the management team participated, including Esteban Fisher (VP E3A). As a result of these creative and productive discussions, our factory action plan, gathering around 50 potential workshops, is broken down into the following themes: Economic Performance & Operational Excellence, Well-being & Safety, Customer satisfaction and Environment.

A monthly steering committee has been created, meeting to deploy and coordinate the various current and future projects in all sectors of the company. To illustrate with concrete applications, the following first projects started:

  • Ergonomics at workstations thanks to support systems for handling and deployment of Karakuri systems, a concept from Japan aimed at improving working conditions and productivity.
  • Flexibility of our manual assembly lines by designing a multi-product pilot line, capable of assembling our main product families through quick tooling changes.
  • Start-up synchronization at the production station in connection with the qualification of the operator in direct connection with the skills of our employees.
  • Automated supervision of our production lines, reporting their performance indicators in real time
  • Dematerialization of our production and maintenance documentation to optimize the efficiency of interventions and their follow-up

This new approach necessarily relies on strong support from the Human Resources department to support this change and on a new vision of our environmental strategy (recycling of energy and wastewater, etc.), in order to limit the impact of our activity as much as possible on our planet.
